have we met?

alice.km trusts her instincts. In truth, the nascent DJ, producer, songwriter and event curator (whose real name is Kaitlyn Mills) has never done anything but. Her instincts got her started on the decks, defined a style of production that is exquisitely ethereal, and guided her all around the United States doing what has only ever felt like a need: playing music.

Mills has maintained this level of internal trust throughout her entire life. She literally started singing as soon as she could talk. It was necessary. An urge. A requirement that her engagement with music could only lead to a profession.

If someone asked Mills, she might humbly jest that it wasn’t her instincts, rather it was a complete accident. But only pure dedication could result in dance music unfolding before her like a red carpet alongside collaborators who are just itching to see where she ends up next.

In 2014 Mills’ instincts led her to the dance music mecca of Brooklyn, New York. Growing up just outside NYC, this is a city to which she had felt drawn since she was very young, and also where house and techno permeate the atmosphere. It was only natural that within this atmosphere she found a home. After two years of reveling in the culture of the borough, her first DJ gig came in 2016, and then dozens more quickly came after that.

Within weeks Mills had a foothold in the New York scene, resulting in gigs at major venues like The Rosewood Theater in Manhattan and hosting hundreds of people every month at her own immersive occult-themed soiree, Midnight Society.

After Brooklyn served her musical evolution, Mills was drawn towards the next level. She relocated to Los Angeles and began organizing her own tours of the entire west coast of the United States. From Seattle to Portland to San Francisco, and stopping in at legendary spaces like Avalon Hollywood and celebrated California festivals like Serenity Gathering.

Nationwide notoriety came from nothing more than a feeling and hard work, and so when the pandemic set in and Mills could no longer expand her artistry behind the decks, her instincts told her it was time to start producing her own music.

After only two years of training in Ableton, Mills is now landing four releases in the first half of 2022 alone, signing to labels like IAMHER, Lots of Practice, and Delusional Records. And with this next level she’s taken her DJ sets to even more notable gigs like an opening slot for Sacha Robotti at Brooklyn’s famed space for the underground: Elsewhere.

Beyond her impressive output, Mills has crafted her own unique sound that paints pictures as well as it induces dance moves. In her pursuit of all things ethereal, she unconsciously pieces together aural images and elocutes sonic narratives. Only after the tracks take form does she find within them stories about exploring outer space or forest nymphs exploring fictional lands.

There is no intention for her to end up at these conclusions. It’s all instinct, and those instincts will take her and her music everywhere she wants to go. Take a listen and join her for the ride.
